Knowledge
"It starts with knowledge..." is more than a motto to us- it's how we do business. Our first goal is to share some of what we have learned about our trade with you.
Finishing
Finishing is the art of applying product to your completed work piece to guard it against wear and damage, and apply an aesthetic look that you or your customer wants to achieve. It's an entire industry unto itself; many specialists dedicate their whole careers to proper finishing. Getting started involves knowing the basics, and their strengths and drawbacks.
Selecting the Right Finish
While we can't tell you what's right for your project, some important factors to consider are:
- Material: Certain species will respond far better to certain types of finishing than others.
- Equipment and Expertise: Many shops utilize in-house production-grade finishing equipment and experts, while others work manually with brushes or guns. but the finish you apply will always depend on your available equipment and expertise. The finish you apply will also depend on the environment you apply the products in- some finishes will produce fumes that could potentially be harmful in an enclosed space. Take some time to consider what the best option for your personal shop situation is.
- Location of the finished piece: Is it indoors or outdoors? Is it exposed to harsh weather, temperature or sea salt? Some finishes will endure the elements better than others- make sure you choose one appropriate for the final destination of the piece.
- Purpose: Is your primary concern to achieve the client's specs of a particular look, or are you primarily looking to protect the wood? Many Finishing solutions contain strong chemicals that are best left out of your workpiece if you can help it. It's always best to choose the finish which is right for the job, which might not always be the one you have on hand.
- Maintenance: No finish lasts forever; occasional maintenance is necessary to keep the finish strong. Following and sharing the manufacturer's application and maintenance guidelines with the client will help ensure your products are showcased in their best light for years to come, and set the right expectations with your clients.
